Larisa Fedorovna, an independent animal rescuer from Moscow, Russia, stumbled upon a severely injured dog on the road. She stopped because she just couldn’t pass by without doing anything. She knew helping the pup would mean more debt and expenses, but she decided to do what was right.
The rescuer took the dog straight to the emergency veterinary clinic in town. She didn’t know what hurt or what was broken but she knew for a fact that the pup needed urgent care. And once they were at the clinic, she felt glad she wasted no time.
The dog, now Shamik, was hit by a car and ended up with a broken spine. His right eye was also severely damaged and no form of surgery brought back his gait. Most of his nerves and muscles were seriously impaired and there wasn’t much to do than to keep him alive.
After his eye surgery, Shamik spent a few days gaining strength. He had to be strong enough for his spine surgery or he would have not even made it out of the operating room alive. He was in the worst imaginable state and it was a complete miracle that he continued to breathe despite it all.
The dog’s first spine surgery was a success. He had an artificial bone installed on his spine, and once he recovered enough, he underwent two more operations. His spine healed well but he needed a wheelchair as soon as his surgery wounds healed.
While Shamik recuperated from his spine injury, another bad news struck. He suffered from a bladder infection and the bacteria that caused it was resistant to most antibiotics. He needed some specialty drugs and they surely weren’t cheap. Thanks to his generous sponsors, he didn’t just get his meds, he also got his own wheelchair.
Shamik’s recovery took a very long process to complete. He got sick more than once but he bounced back over and over again. He cleared all his medical examinations and he finally got his medical clearance after several months.
He may have lost his eyesight and his ability to use all his legs but Shamik never lost his will and determination to live. His perseverance and resiliency proved that he will always be bigger than any problem he may encounter in this world.
