Hank is a massive English Mastiff that tips the scale at 280 pounds. Also known as Hank the Tank, this gentle giant is a big hit with the seniors living in an assisted facility in Winnipeg. Many of them eagerly await the next time he comes for a visit.
Many of the senior residents at the Riverwood Square retirement community cherish those visits from Hank. He gives them the opportunity to become socially engaged. His presence also brings back many wonderful memories from their childhood. He gives so much happiness, especially to the seniors that have dementia.
A gruesome scene
Hank lives with Marie Swanson, but the dog used to be owned by her daughter, Gina.
The English Mastiff was merely a pup when Gina took her into her home. Tragically, she was one day found dead inside her house. Marie said that it was a very gruesome scene. Her daughter was bound and stabbed several times.
During the entire ordeal, dealing with the investigation of the murder and the funeral, Hank was by Marie’s side. The gentle pooch gave her the strength to cope up with the tragedy. Ever since then, the dog has been the purpose of Marie’s life.
Therapy dog
Hank has been so effective in giving comfort to Marie that she eventually decided to get him trained as a therapy dog. They have been together for five years, and she felt that it was time that others would benefit from the dog’s charm and sweetness.
Hank was enrolled at the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program, and he passed with flying colors. Ever since then, they would go to a local senior residence once a week.
Watching Hank give happiness to the residents makes Marie feel good about their situation. According to her, Gina would have loved to see her precious pet make other people’s lives better.
