Chupey is not like any other dog you meet. He was born with a birth defect that made him look like he’s constantly grinning. Perhaps that’s what endeared his mom, Kaley Carlyle, to adopt him.
Chupey’s story
Kaley first met Chupey in 2018. A woman came to her, asking to take in Chupey and two other pups. The two other pups looked normal, but Chupey’s appearance sure stood out. The pup has a hairless body, a pair of beaded eyes, and his ears rolled inside out. But Chupey’s most remarkable feature was the permanent smile he wears all the time.
Still, Kaley agreed to care for Chupey on the condition that the woman would have the puppies’ mom spayed.
Kaley named the odd-looking dog Chupey because he resembles the mythical creature Chupacabra. In Latin American folklore, the Chupacabra is a monstrous creature that drinks animals’ blood. Chupey looks like a mixture of a hyena and a wolf, and Kaley wasn’t sure of his breed. But one thing is for sure, Chupey is too loving and sweet to be likened to a monster.
Loving a special needs dog
Chupey is a special needs dog. He had terrible liver problems, so he was always sleepy. Thankfully, Chupey’s special diet is helping him fight this condition.
Additionally, Kaley had to put sunscreen on Chupey’s bald body during the sunny days. During the cold seasons, Chupey has to bundle up to keep himself warm.
Chupey needs a few special things to live a happy and healthy life, but Kaley does not mind giving them to him. Her favorite thing about Chupey is his cheerful personality. He loves being part of the things around him. Chupey also loves to cuddle with his mom under the sheets and does a cute little dance when he gets excited.
Kaley hopes to encourage people to see dogs with special needs from a different perspective. These dogs are indeed special in their own ways. They may require extra TLC, but they’ll love you many times back.
