Love at First Sight
Lindsay Kelly and her family met Reggie at Mansfield Animal Shelter in Mansfield, Texas. They all fell in love with the Dalmatian-bull terrier mix. Clearly, this was no surprise, though, as the pup had a sweet personality and adorable large ears.
However, the shelter staff warned them that it might be a challenge to take care of Reggie. They believed she had been deaf her whole life. This meant the Kelly family must exert more effort in training the puppy. Despite the canine’s condition, Lindsay’s family went through with the adoption and brought Reggie home.
Initially, it was challenging to communicate with the deaf dog. Alternatively, they figured out how to train her with hand signals. It also helped that Lindsay had two other dogs at home from whom Reggie would take her cues. Subsequently, Reggie simply turned to them whenever something eventful happened and followed their leads.
New Adventures
Soon enough, Reggie had settled into her new home. Lindsay enjoyed seeing the sweet pup warming up to the family. The fur mom thought that the pup was already content with her current state of life. Even so, Reggie was curious about one thing: barking.
Undoubtedly, she never heard what a bark sounded like, but she watched her fur siblings in action. In general, Reggie thought that it was an excellent way of getting their owner’s attention. So one day, she decided to experiment with her voice.
When Lindsay heard Reggie’s bark, she initially thought that the pup was coughing or sneezing. In short, it sounded more like a squeak. However, the puppy kept looking at her as she repeated her bark. Finally, the fur mom realized what her adopted dog was doing.
Although the bark didn’t come out as expected, Lindsay was proud of Reggie’s accomplishment and kept praising her. Following this lesson, the pup began barking more frequently to get attention and treats. No one minded rewarding the achievement. Watch Reggie’s adorable made-up bark in action here.
