Beauty was only two months old when she arrived at the Animal Protection Society Melios in Lakonia, Greece. Her owner abandoned her in the Mani Peninsula and then, a local charity took her in. She was a gorgeous puppy, but she was unwanted so she lived a difficult life on the streets.
Animal Protection Society Melios had about 150 rescue dogs at that time but 3 volunteers who worked round the clock. They tried their best but they struggled to make ends meet. They promoted and networked every animal, and yet, managed to rehome only a few dogs.
The women who run the shelter did all that they could to help Beauty find a home. But sadly, potential adopters didn’t want to adopt a black dog. People looked at her differently, and only her rescue friends found her lovely.
Beauty, despite her sweet demeanor and adorable looks, failed to find a family. She was unlucky. As a result, she spent days, months, and years inside her kennel instead of a home.
Eventually, Beauty got very ill. She needed to be out of the shelter or she’d deteriorate pretty fast. Zaira, one of the volunteers, took her home and promised her she’d never go back to the shelter again.
The dog tested positive with Leishmaniasis, a condition that needed intensive treatment and therapy. With the help of The Orphan Pet and SPAZ Greece, she received the medical care she needed. She recovered and became healthy once again.
The rescuers tried to rehome Beauty one more time but failed. In the end, Zaira decided to adopt her. She knew her from the very beginning so why not be with her until the end, she told herself.
Beauty thrived in her new home and she loved her new life. She was so grateful that she finally found the forever family she sought for a very long time. When she fell sick again, she wasn’t alone. Zaira stayed by her side until the end.
