Astro was a stray dog in his previous life. But everything changed when he got adopted into a loving family. Astro would do everything for his family, especially if their lives are in danger.
Astro’s story
It’s unfair that pit bulls get such a bad rap. Many people think that this breed of dogs is vicious and aggressive. But for the Martinez family of El Paso, Texas, their beloved pit bull, Astro, is nothing short of a hero.
Astro was a stray before coming into his family last year. His owner, Bertha Martinez, admits that she has her apprehensions before adopting Astro. But as Astro settled in with them, she saw that this dog is such a sweetheart. Astro showed her that pit bulls are kind and gentle. Bertha realized that she had nothing to worry about.
Astro to the rescue
Bertha saw just how much Astro loves his family quite recently. When Bertha’s son had a medical emergency, Astro was the only one at home with him. He knew that there was something wrong with his brother, so the smart dog quickly ran out to get help. Astro approached a stranger and led him to his human. The Good Samaritan called 911, and Astro’s brother was rushed to a hospital.
Astro’s family was surprised with their dog’s quick thinking. Astro did not train to respond to medical emergencies, but it seemed like Astro knew what to do. The Martinez’s believe that Astro’s protective instincts and devotion led him to save his brother’s life.
According to the El Paso Fire Department, Astro was determined to climb the ambulance and stay by his brother’s side. They had to lure Astro to another vehicle to get the worried dog off the ambulance. The firefighters also say that if it wasn’t for Astro, it might have been too late before the patient was found.
To officially proclaim Astro as a hero, the El Paso residents awarded him a medal and a doggy cake to boot. Astro’s family is happy about the recognition. It only goes to prove that if you love a dog with all your heart, the dog repays such love as much, even more.
