Cheddar loved his first family. He lived with them for his first 8 years. Sadly, when one of his parents was diagnosed with cancer, they had a tough choice. His parents did not have enough time or resources to care for Cheddar. They made the heart wrenching decision to surrender him to a rescue group. They hoped his new family would love him.
Adopted
True, at his age Cheddar was considered a senior dog, but he was quickly adopted. His new family adored him. To show his gratitude for their acceptance, Cheddar made it clear from day one that being around them was critical. He demanded constant attention and returned their adoration as only a pup can.
Shelley Vassall, Cheddar’s new mom related how needed Cheddar is. Petting neeed more petting with insistent moves like bumping your hand or a paw reminder. She told The Dodo, of the pup’s need for attention. “All Cheddar wants is to have all attention on him —He would have you sit for hours if he could, just petting him.”
As a result, Cheddar loves every person he meets, if they provide the attention he craves. He doesn’t play favorites to any human pet provider. That is until he met one of the neighbors and was completely besotted.
Love at First Sight
Shortly after adoption, Cheddar and his mom went for a walk one day. They came across an older couple sitting on their front stoop and stopped to chat. Cheddar took an instant love to the woman, Jean. They hung out with them for a while before heading home. Since that fateful day, they have returned to visit every day. Granted, Cheddar refuses any other choice.
Cheddar’s mom explained that they try to go every day. This couple is just around the corner from where they live. Vassall said, “When it’s been more than a few days and we haven’t seen her, Cheddar is particularly vocal. He knows exactly what street they are on and in fact, even if we don’t head there, he insists on it by pulling on the leash and trying to turn in that direction. If we pass the house with no intention of going in, he plants himself with full body weight on one spot and stands there until you relent.”
Best Friends
Absolutely, Jean has cookies for Cheddar every single time he comes over. The real draw is the connection he has with her. For some reason, is unlike any connection he has with anyone else. Visiting her every day brings him so much joy. All he really wants when they visit is to stay by her side, for as long as he possibly can.
“When he sees her, his reaction is one that very few get,” Vassall said. “Cheddar is not a barker, but he certainly talks a plenty when he’s really, really happy or excited. When visiting in winter, we spend the time indoors and Cheddar just wants to sit by Jean’s side and be petted. That’s ALL he wants. In better weather — spring, summer and fall — we spend the time in their backyard where he loves to roll in the grass with his leash or a tennis ball and then sit next to Jean for more attention.”
Cheddar anticipates the daily visits, and Jean is not opposed. This sweet golden retriever is older and still a lover. He has energy along with love to give his incredible family, and his heart’s delight, Auntie Jean.
