In 2017, Amy Burkert and her husband, Rod, set out on a year-long United States road trip in their RV. The best part of the travel vacation included Buster, their German shepherd, and Ty, their shar-pei.
Adoption of Rescued Animals
The couple focuses on traveling with their pets as a family and avoiding unnecessary hotel accommodations.
The family chronicled their expedition and captured the events in Amy Burkert’s book, “The Ultimate Pet-Friendly Road Trip.”
Their 15,000-mile trek coast to coast in the lower 48 states began in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Here they participated in the first of their animal adoption drives in conjunction with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Monterey Bay. Absolutely, one of the couple’s top priorities for making the trip included raising awareness for the adoption of rescued animals. Their 10-month adventure between February and November allowed the couple to host 17 animal adoption drives.
The Path To Travel
Like most people, the Burkert family held traditional jobs before launching full time for their blog GoPetFriendly.com. Amy Burkert left her multinational auditing firm in 2009 to focus on her love for animals. Luckily, Ray Burkert, owner of an independent consulting services business, works effectively from anywhere.
The tipping point for starting the adventure of a lifetime; a frank conversation of their life priorities. They enjoyed advising folks where to take their dogs for various activities yet lack the been there and done that experience.
Until that open discussion, they had not thought about their personal end game. Consequently, Ron and Amy sold their home, purchased the RV, and supplemented their income between the blog and the consulting business.
Amy focuses on helping people travel with their pets without anxiety. She recommends a long weekend with a target destination or two. Ultimately, expanding to week-long road trips or longer. Undoubtedly, each trip gets more comfortable and more fun with more experience.
