A dog named Nuri used to be a stray dog. A kind restaurant owner took her in and provided a home for her right at the restaurant where she became a mascot of sorts. Patrons who had a soft spot for her would try to give her some meat, but she was disciplined enough not to take advantage of their kindness.
Nuri had been staying with her adoptive dad for a couple of months. As far as her dad knew, she did not have any puppies. She was not pregnant either when he adopted her, so he was puzzled to discover that she was lactating.
At about the time when Nuri began lactating, a cat named Nabi came to her, and they seemed to have a close relationship. He was wounded when he arrived. Nuri was immediately concerned and started licking Nabi’s wound. From then on, the cat stayed.
Then Nuri’s dad discovered that Nabi was nursing from her friend. He thought that Nuri would get exhausted with breastfeeding, so he started feeding Nabi. However, the cat continued suckling.
A neighbor recognized the duo and disclosed that Nabi lost his mother when he was a kitten. Nuri found him and treated him like her own son. She nursed him, but he was never weaned. As a result, he was still suckling even though he had grown up.
According to Park Soon-Seon, a vet, if Nuri continued breastfeeding, it could result in uterine disease and a tumor in the mammary gland because Nuri’s lactation did not come naturally. It resulted in her need to nurture another creature. He recommended that Nabi should be weaned by putting a bitter medicine on Nuri’s mammary glands.
Nuri’s dad followed the vet’s advice. The next time that Nabi tried to nurse from Nuri, he tasted the bitter medicine. It was an unpleasant experience for him, so he never tried to suckle again.
Nuri’s dad recognized the bond between the two, so he decided to adopt Nabi as well. He provided a suitable home for them so that they would never be separated again.
