A Michigan farmer named Bob lived alone in his farmland with his pet dog Kelsey. On New Year’s Eve, the man and his pooch spent the night watching the festivities on TV.
Noticing that the fire in his fireplace was weakening, he decided to go out and get some more logs. The pile was just nearby, and he knew it was going to be a quick chore. He didn’t bother to put on a coat and just went out wearing a t-shirt and his long johns.
When Bob was walking back, carrying an armful of logs, he slipped on some ice and was unable to break his fall. The senior man injured his neck.
Cries for help
Bob kept on trying to call for help. But since his closest neighbor was around a quarter of a mile away, nobody could hear him. He tried to get up, but the injured man was paralyzed. With very little clothing on, he started shivering. Bob feared that he would succumb to hypothermia.
Although no humans heard him cry for assistance, his dog did. Kelsey got out of the house and started barking loudly. She tried to get someone’s attention. But still, no one heard their collective call.
For the next 20 hours, Kelsey stayed by his owner’s side. She would snuggle close to Bob and keep him warm. The loyal dog would also lick his face to keep him awake and comfort him. From time to time, she would start howling again, desperately seeking help for her injured owner.
Finally, a neighbor heard her when he went over to their farm. He called 911 right away.
Loyal to the end
Bob was not in good condition when he arrived at the hospital. His core temperature was very low. Doctor’s also found that had a herniated disc in his neck. They went to work on him right away, and they stabilized his condition.
Bob said that he would have died that day. If it weren’t for Kelsey and her determination to keep him warm and safe, there was no way he would have survived.
